Our hike up to Sarkofagen begins on the eastern side of the mountain with Larsbreen, one of the two glaciers local to Longyearbyen. We walk up through the moraine landscape, formed by the glacier over thousands of years, and up to the top of Sarkofagen. Here we drink a coffee as we take in the stunning view over Longyearbyen and Adventfjord. To the southwest, past more moraine and beautiful small meltwater waterfalls, lies Longyearbreen. This is the second half of the trip, and sometimes we need to put on crampons to be able to walk on the ice. We follow the meltwater channels down to the moraine in the middle of the glacier and if you're lucky, you might find a 35 million year old fossil that you can take home as a unique reminder of your time on Svalbard.
