5-day Adventure Week at Nordenskiöld Lodge

Join us on a unique adventure to the Nordenskiöld glacier! On this trip you will be cast far away from Longyearbyen right into the heart of the Arctic and our Nordenskiöld Lodge. The Lodge itself is perched at the edge of the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier. With no running water or electricity, Nordenskiöld Lodge is a true expedition cabin, but with modern comforts. DAY 1: The guide will pick you up at your hotel at 08:00 am. We will go through today’s program and give you an important safety briefing before we start making our way to the expedition store and afterwards to the harbour. We will slip into warm survival suits before we are heading towards to Billefjorden and Adolfbukta in an open polarcircle boat. Once at Nordenskiöld cabin we will enjoy an outdoor lunch and get familiar with the cabin and the surroundings. After lunch it is time to head out into the arctic nature and explore the beauty of the isolated outpost. We return to the cabin in the evening, where you will be served a delicious dinner and get to enjoy a pre-heated sauna. Accommodation in double rooms. DAY 2: The day begins with a solid breakfast, before leaving the comforts of the Nordenskiold Lodge to go kayaking. We use reliable double kayaks. We paddle in pairs. Kayaking is the perfect way to get around in the arctic and is probably the ultimate way to explore a calving glacier front and the arctic shorelines. Today’s destination will be determined by the weather and sea conditions, as well as your level of paddling skills. We paddle next to the magnificent glacier front amongst floating pieces of glacier ice, while being observed by the curious wildlife. After a long day paddling the cold, arctic sea, the comforts of a warm sauna and a proper meal awaits you. Accommodation in double room. DAY 3: Today we will head out to the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier. After breakfast we will go through the basic guidelines and safety precautions associated with glacier hiking. We will set out to explore the heavily crevassed glacier, we'll hike for 1,5 km (about 30 minutes) from the cabin. We spend the day hiking up and down the glacier, staring down cracks and enjoying the shiny glacier surface. We will eat expedition lunch on the glacier. If the weather is nice, we will make a bonfire once back at the cabin, and simply cherish the view of the fjord. Accommodation in double room. DAY 4: Today we strap on our hiking boots and start the hike to some of the surrounding mountain/moraine peaks. We will explore the beautiful Arctic landscape, glacier moraines and arctic flowers that have adapted to the harsh environment. We will summit one of the nearby mountain peaks and enjoy expedition lunch on the way. Once back at the cabin we will enjoy a delicious meal and the pre-heated sauna. Accommodation in double room. DAY 5: On this last day, you may especially appreciate waking up to the sound of the glacier, which is constantly changing. And maybe there will be an extra cup of coffee after breakfast, to enjoy the sight of the mighty ice blue that we see from the cabin. After breakfast it is time to pack before the boat that will take us back to Longyearbyen arrives. Few people want to leave this special place, but the vast majority return home with incredible memories. On the way back to civilization, we keep a lookout for marine wildlife and the land areas we pass. For Arctic sea safaris, it is necessary to pay attention. Wildlife appears suddenly and can disappear just as quickly. We often encounter various whale species in Billefjorden, and our boat captains are well trained in keeping a lookout. Enjoy the return trip, it's a great end to a special trip.
